Sleep Disorders

Sleep is one of the most fundamental and important things we do as humans. The importance of sleep cannot be overstated. There are many types of sleep conditions and many reasons they occur. It can be a genetic problem, an existing condition that impacts sleep, a brain problem, or even a pulmonary problem.

Sleep conditions and difficulty with sleep can lead to many problems and put people at increased risk for

    1: Heart attack and stroke
    2: Weight gain, obesity
    3: Diabetes
4: Memory, attention, and concentration problems
    5: Depression and Anxiety
    6: Pain
    7: Fatigue throughout the day
8: Many other conditions and disease

Types of sleep issues Dr. Sharon treats:

Insomnia - Insomnia is the inability to sleep either due to primary insomnia itself or often due to other factors that lead to insomnia. This can be a very disabling condition that affects many people. Often individuals suffer throughout the day in terms of fatigue, headaches and pain, difficulty thinking and functioning, and other symptoms. It can potentially lead to addiction to medications that sedate people or put them to sleep.

Jet Lag - Difficulty adjusting to a different time zone when traveling. Dr. Sharon is an expert at advising strategies on how to reduce the impact of jet lag or prevent jet lag when traveling, either through sleep strategies before, during and after traveling, or through pharmaceutical approaches during travel.

Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders - Patient's internal "clock" is set at a different time, leading them to need to either sleep earlier or later. Often, if they adjust to their internal clock they are fine

Sleep Apnea - Arising either from the brain itself or from relaxation of the muscles of the throat, patients often end up getting poor quality sleep and end up with headaches, pain, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating throughout the day. When this condition is more severe, the blood doesn't get enough oxygen and it increases people's risk of heart attacks and stroke

Hypersomnia - Also known as excessive sleepiness, hypersomnia is a condition where people have trouble staying awake, even if they are sleeping many hours. It can lead to fatigue and cognitive problems. Often, an underlying reason or condition is found but not always.

Restless Leg Syndrome&Periodic Limb Movement Disorder - These disorders are actually very common and can lead to poor sleep, frustration, pain, and fatigue. Patients either feel a need to move their arms and legs and feel restless or have movements of their extremities when they sleep which can cause discomfort to them or loved ones in the same bed.
